Based on what my kiddo is enjoying right now I sewed up (yes sewed) a neon yellow and pink paper lantern piece that will be perfect as a slumber party lantern; as the kiddos always seem to sack out in the living room (and because we don’t have night lights around these parts). A few battery candles from the $1.00 store and this is ready to go. I love how the light peeps out the holes from the stitches.
To make the lantern 5 pieces of paper total were used: two full pieces of 8 1/2 X 11″ Astrobrights Paper in yellow and pink, 1 sheet of green for the base circle, 1 sheet of pink for shapes, and 1 sheet of yellow for shapes. First was to stitch the two full pieces of pink and neon together along the 11″ side with a 1/2″ seam allowance. Then shapes were freehand cut and appliqued on to the paper. <The secret to stitching paper is to use wide stitches –not close together stitches. Wide stitches will ensure you don’t end up perforating the paper and it splitting.> A glue stick was used to adhere the lantern together including sticking it to the paper base. Of course you can make no-sew lanterns with paper, scissors and glue. What a fun project for the kiddos. I can’t wait to make a few more of these for upcoming parties (and perfect my technique).
